Date of Release: 01/08/18  Release #: 1-1
Information:

Late Friday evening, 01/05/17, 11:06pm, the Green Lake County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a snowmobiler possibly broken through the ice up-river from the City of Berlin.   With the assistance of a second snowmobiler who had been traveling with the now missing one, search efforts began to the west of the City of Berlin.

At 11:21pm, Green Lake Sheriff’s E911 center received a call from the missing snowmobiler stating that he had crashed his machine. The injured snowmobiler was able to provide GPS coordinates from his phone which were mapped. Due to the type of anticipated injury and cold conditions, Theda Star helicopter had been called to respond. Theda Star arrived on the scene and used overhead lighting to locate the crashed snowmobiler on a length of ditch from the Fox River commonly referred to as the “Town Drain”, two miles west of the initial search area in the Town of Berlin.

Assisted by the Berlin Police Department, Berlin Fire Department, Berlin Emergency Management, Berlin Ambulance and Medic Unit, also, two local citizens with snowmobiles, the injured subject was removed from the marsh and transported for medical treatment.

The injured snowmobiler, a 31 year old Campbellsport male, sustained non-life threatening injuries and will survive. A preliminary investigation into this incident has revealed that the pair of snowmobiliers were unfamiliar with the upper Fox River area and became lost. The injured snomobiler, following the lead machine, struck a fixed object and was ejected from the machine. Alcohol does not appear to be a factor in this crash.

Sheriff Mark Podoll, who responded to the rescue effort commented, “We are all very happy that the injured snomobiler was found quickly; a job well done by all the emergency responders and espically with the help of two local citizens – a great community effort”.
