Message from the Sheriff – Gun Deer Season

 Topic: Wisconsin Gun Deer Season 2017

At the beginning of legal shooting hours, this Saturday, November 18, marks the start of the 2017 gun deer season in Wisconsin. I know some of you wait all year for this nine day stretch and some also for the muzzleloader season following. Concerning this statewide event and Thanksgiving holiday season, I’d like to touch on some law enforcement related concerns that my staff typically encounter:

• Weapons related safety – Take the time to know your weapons function, make sure the safety is on and to practice “TABK” Courtesy of the Wisconsin DNR–

1. T = Treat every firearm as if it is loaded.
2. A = Always point the muzzle in a safe direction.
3. B = Be certain of your target and what’s beyond it.
4. K = Keep your finger outside the trigger guard until ready to shoot.

• Alcohol and firearms don’t mix – in fact, going armed while intoxicated is against the law. While being a festive time of the year, maybe you’ll have a reason to celebrate, don’t consume alcohol while in possession of a firearm or while driving.
• Trespassing – Remember, it’s your responsibility to know whose land you are on or entering. Get permission to hunt, get permission to track.
• Theft – Every fall season we see thefts from parked vehicles, hunting equipment, and stands. Recently, we had several elevated metal hunting stands stolen from Fountain Rd. west of Berlin. Crime Stoppers takes tips concerning such activity. Lock your vehicles and take preventative measures to make sure your property stays put.
• Courtesy – A big one for me as your Sheriff. Hunting can bring out the worst or best in some. Being courteous and respectful of others’ rights and your responsibilities can make or break the rest of this month or the rest of the year. Be courteous and understanding – we’re all in this together.
