On Friday February 24, at approximately 12:24pm Green Lake County Sheriff's Office received a 911 call from the wife of a subject who had fallen through the ice on Big Green Lake near Sunset Park. The victim was in the water at the time of the call.
Green Lake Fire Department, Green Lake First Responders, Green Lake EMS, Princeton Ice and Water Rescue, Green Lake Police Department and the Green Lake County Sheriff's Department were paged to respond to the scene.Authorites arrived at about 12:27pm and a Deputy Sheriff was able to rescue the victim from the icy water at about 12:31pm. The victim was walking off the lake and broke through the ice at a crack that had been covered by the recent snowfall. The victim was able to call his wife using his cell phone, and keep his head above water by hanging onto his equipment sled and the edge of the ice. The victim estimated that he was in the water for 15 minutes prior to rescue. The victim was transported to Ripon Medical Center for evaluation. Outdoor enthusiasts are reminded that warmer than normal conditions has made recreation on the ice hazardous.
